Inside the front cover is written "Mis Lucinda Phelph's Book" and a paper pasted on the next page reading, "Mis Lucinda Phelph's Book, Washington, Erie, Co, Pa April 28, 1845." Lucinda was born in 1829. She was a school teacher. She, along with two of her friends, drowned in Conneauttee Creek, June 24, 1849, when coming home from church, their buggy went off a bridge flooded by storms. The girls probably drowned due to the weight of their clothes. The driver, John Ash, escaped drowning.
