Description |
2 receipts signed by F.T. Billings from the Franklin Center Cheese Factory from July and August, 1882. They show the amount he was paid for making cheese and butter. In July he made $284.26 and in August he made $237.49. Frank Billings was a son of Ezekiel Billings (1793-1879) who received 160 acres on Kinter Hill for serving in the War of 1812. He would be the uncle of Wilbur Billings. He owned the cheese factory, just west of Franklin Center on Old State Road. A 1884 report stated it consumes 1,585,000 pounds of milk a year and makes 158,500 pounds of cheese a year and 60 pounds of butter a day. 6 teams (horses?) and 8 men work there. A Billings Hall is attached for meetings and dances. |
